Statement of Larry Jacobs to Rockford City Council
In Support of the Mobile Ultrasound Unit
April 25, 2011
Good evening Mayor Morrissey and fellow citizens! My name is Larry Jacobs and I speak tonight in support of the mobile ultrasound unit on behalf of myself as a transplanted resident to Rockford, a worker, a teacher, a tax payer, a husband and a father. I’m here as a concerned citizen not in any professional role as Vice President of the Howard Center for Family, Religion and Society or Managing Director of the World Congress of Families.
In the short time allotted, I wish to share my reasons for supporting the mobile ultrasound but more importantly, the reasons that all of us should be actively protesting the existence of an abortion business in Rockford and industry in America that preys on poor, minority women and families, especially black and Hispanic women where 94% of clinics locate. We are reminded of further injustice by the abortion industry in the arrest for multiple murders at the Philadelphia abortion clinic that was not inspected for more than 8 years because of so called “right to choose,” and by the founding of Planned Parenthood and the abortion movement that is rooted in its founder, Margaret Sangers’ words, “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and other undesirables”…or even more such horrific quotes that can be found in the black genocide documentary, MAAFA21: Black Genocide in the 21st Century.“ Even faced with such evil as the abortion industry, Many of us wonder whether it is necessary to speak out so aggressively against an injustice such as abortion. We tend to forget Noah Webster’s words, “God grants liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it.” Even with such inspiring words, I myself, lean towards a less aggressive and intrusive approach to objecting to abortion – perhaps I can just pray quietly and give to good pro-life organizations from a distance – I find it really quite easier, convenient and less adversarial than “standing up” or “speaking out.” At these times, I try remember the words of Edmund Burke, “All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.” or Martin Luther King’s inspired words that "A just law squares with the moral law of the law of God. An unjust law . . . is out of harmony with the moral law. King added, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
So in what time that is left, let’s examine the facts about abortion: ethics, science, medicine and social science; and why we should all be for the mobile ultrasound unit (which by the way, changes the mind of abortion-minded women., 93% of the time from my research and experience running a medical ministry for uninsured pregnant women in Cincinnati, Ohio), but more even importantly why we should all be against the abortion industry which preys on women in our community and nationwide.
Ethical reasons or Moral Law as referred to by Martin Luther King is pretty clear “Thou Shall Not Murder” or In Jesus’s words - “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” But let’s examine the scientific arguments. Life begins at conception so says Webster’s Dictionary, or as found in my high school biology textbook and even a U.S. Congressional expert panel agrees on the beginning of life. A babies’ heartbeat can even by detected by the mobile ultrasound unit here in Rockford as early as 6 week. Even the medical facts about abortion are enough to convince a reasonable person that abortion is harmful and dangerous to women. Or put it this way, what woman with these facts would ever choose to have any medical procedure:
· that increases her chance of death by 60%,
· that has major health risks including significant increased risks of breast cancer and cervical cancer;
· that has significant increased rates of suicide and mental illness,
· and that has increases her risk of future premature births and even infertility.
Ok, maybe there’s even more to the issue than these medical facts covered up by the abortion industry and we should look to advice from our nation’s leaders such as our President, Barack Obama. Consider this wise statement from a Father’s Day speech in Obama’s own words (not his actions or policies), “We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception. We need them to realize that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child – it's the courage to raise one.” Of course, “to raise one” you have to first have the mother give birth to the child!
Perhaps the best advice and wisdom comes from an unlikely source; not something I learned from two Master’s degrees at Yale University nor my experience as a manager at Procter & Gamble, the largest consumer products company in the world…no it was from the uncorrupted, uncomplicated and honest viewpoint of my 12 year old son, who said “Dad, abortion is wrong. What kind of person would ever want to kill a baby anyway.” Thank you for listening…
